Students work as a systems engineering team to build systems.” Green’s orientation program for incoming freshmen is hardly the anticipated snoozefest many new students dread. “During the two-day orientation event, students form teams of five to work together to replicate a model that they can’t see,” says Green. "Some of the team members can see the original and only talk to certain team members, while others can talk to everyone but can’t see the original model. I use this form of hierarchy in my classes when teaching systems engineering from the project management perspective.” Boasting an impressive 17-25 percent of the school’s female population heading into STEM-related fields, Green’s programs prove that STEM-related fields are not gender-specific. “This is my eleventh year teaching at the Marine Academy of Science and Technology," she says. "In my first few years, we had very few females take the upper-level Systems Engineering Course. Now my classes are more female than male. I teach with the notion that, ‘If I can do it, you can do it!’” STEMming the Tide By Sascha Zuger Wendy Green, technology educator at the 274student Marine Academy of Science and Technology high school, in Sandy Hook, NJ, has found one way to get students interested in STEM- Wendy Green related subjects: Make it interesting.
