Technology & Learning - January 2009 - (Page 33) W W W.T E C H L E A R N I N G . C O M Finding the right printers is a challenge. Between the multitude of questions (inket? laser? network? standalone? buy? lease?) and vendors (see sidebar), you’ll have a lot of decisions to make. Here are four districts’ stories for you to ponder. HOW THEY DO IT “Teachers assign and return all assignments via Studywiz, so they don’t need to print anything out and students don’t need to hand anything in. Communication between teachers and students or parents is done through Studywiz as well. Our textbooks are online, and teachers can send lessons to students’ laptops for notetaking or studying. We never print drafts—only final products. The next step is to send out parental communication via email. We will mail to the folks without email access, and we’ll email the rest.” Printer Vendors Brother www.brother-usa.com Canon www.usa.canon.com CDW-G “When I came here, we were buying $1,000 laser printers with biodegradable toner. We were just starting to use Scantron for testing, for which we had to buy Brother scanners. Instead of buying just scanners, we looked at all-in-one devices. We buy refurbished, network-ready all-in-one machines for about $260 that let teachers scan, print, copy, and fax. Teachers can walk up and scan to their desktop computer. When they return to their class, the scan is already there. In addition, we put in a low- to medium-cost color laser printer at each school. Schools can purchase their own inkjets but we do not provide cartridges.” www.cdwg.com Dell www.dell.com Epson www.epson.com HP “We have a color laser printer in nearly every classroom. Before going with color, we did a test in the high school where we gave one teacher a black-and-white printer and one teacher a color printer. Different classes consistently performed better on the color tests. By replacing the inkjets that cost 50 cents a page with color lasers that cost 12 cents a page (3 cents for black & white), we saved $211,000 in the first year and are on track to save more than $1 million in printing costs during a five-year period.” www.hp.com Kyocera www.kyoceramita.com Lexmark www.lexmark.com OKI Data Americas “Six years ago, we had inkjets in most of our classrooms. Within two years, the schools couldn’t afford to restock them with ink. Teachers were using the wrong kind of paper and saturation levels were high. We needed to be able to manage the printing so that these types of issues could be avoided. For starters, if we are able to set saturation levels properly, there is less ink, less dry time, and the print jobs come out fairly quickly. Since the printers are no longer in their classrooms, they are more selective in what they print. Also, they’ve learned how to scan documents. We have seen a drop in electricity bills, since the new printers don’t require as many amps to stay cool.” www.okidata.com Samsung www.samsung.com Xerox www.xerox.com TECH & LEARNING | 33 http://WWW.TECHLEARNING.COM http://www.brother-usa.com http://www.usa.canon.com http://www.cdwg.com http://www.dell.com http://www.epson.com http://www.hp.com http://www.kyoceramita.com http://www.lexmark.com http://www.okidata.com http://www.samsung.com http://www.xerox.com
