Hamlet — Testing the future driver behind the development of the revolutionary FlexiScope and its smaller brother, the MicroFlex. Despite their compact size each includes a high resolution TFT screen that provides a confidence monitor as well as easily read test displays. A simple menu structure gives access to all the tools the engineer will need. Inside, the FlexiScope uses a unique bespoke digital signal processing platform, developed by Hamlet specifically for high precision, highly affordable test and measurement. The alldigital processing means that it never needs recalibration, and performance is carefully tuned to minimise power drain: a single battery charge will comfortably last through a busy shift. Most important, the platform is modular: you slot in an I/O card to perform the checks you need. That means that the FlexiScope or MicroFlex can perform checks on any format from analogue composite standard definition right up to 3Gb/s HD. Some modules also include integrated test signal generation so you have the complete package in the palm of your hand. The modules incorporate all of the tools you are likely to need, including the vital eye pattern measurement to check the stability of the digital signal. If 2008 was a landmark year for Hamlet – not least thanks to the TV Technology Star award for the Axiom precision test signal generator – then 2009 looks set to be even better. Broadcasters around the world are actively building out HD infrastructures, and increasingly that means installations that are at least ready for 1080p digital signals and their 3Gb/s data rates. This puts unprecedented demands on equipment and its interconnection, so engineers need to be able to check every Award winning hand held Protean Axiom 3G, MicroFlex with EYE module and the MonitorScope MS9000 with measurement and monitoring module This module will be shipping in the first quarter of 2009, making it the world’s first 3Gb/s eye pattern device. Exactly the same modules can also be used in Hamlet’s two fixed installation ranges: the step of the way during installation and keep an eye on signal integrity throughout operations. The requirement is for test and measurement systems that are flexible, portable, comprehensive and accessible. While there is still the need for the conventional, permanently installed device, increasingly engineers are mobile and they need their tools with them. The award-winning Axiom test signal generator is a fine example. It produces the complete range of audio and video test signals, including alphanumeric idents, in all video standards including 3Gb/s – and it fits into the palm of the hand. Fault-finding through an installation is made simple. The idea of the handheld, always with you, device was the MonitorScope which mimics the conventional half rack-width test device, and the DigiScope which is a 1U cabinet feeding any monitor. The whole range of test and measurement needs of any installation can be met from this flexible platform, fixed and portable.
