Product Know How Custom Furniture

Made to Order
Innovative designs inspire a new generation of products

Furniture design is an ever-evolving business, but one thing remains
constant: innovative products that inspire design. While custom
furniture has always been important to manufacturers and designers,
it's now being integrated into the wider narrative and ambiance of a
hospitality space.
Shelby Williams does prototype work for focus-service brands,
such as Hilton Garden Inn and Courtyard by Marriott, but Jordan
McInturf, vice president of sales for the company, has noticed a
change in the standard furniture those hotels are seeking. For hotels
in Portland, Oregon, or Austin-places with a distinct local culture-
designers "don't want the same fabrics or fi nishes," he says. Instead,
they're taking the approved or standard brand design and adjusting
it a bit. "It's not truly custom, but it's a modified project to meet
regionalized demand and a design style that understands the core
essence of the region," he adds.
Customized furniture can elevate a hotel from a cookie-cutter
project to a distinctive space. "In an industry like hospitality, it's
very easy to fall into the category of the typical commercial chain,"
says Rachel Hunt of Aceray. "We've all experienced walking into an
establishment and seeing the exact same design motif and furnishings
that are utilized in so many other venues." To give the customer a
high-quality aesthetic, the products should inform a guest's stay,
invoking a bespoke feeling and "creating a memorable experience, thus
making them more likely to return," she adds.
It's true that guests' tastes are changing, and design is playing a
more prominent role in customer satisfaction. Th is is partially due
