"We saw a trend of more remodels and less new build over the
past two years," explains Mike Riley, CEO of OW Hospitality.
"We see a bright future and dormant projects opening back up."
As sales grow at carpet companies like Lexmark, Milliken, and
OW Hospitality, so do designers' expectations. One of the main
elements driving the push for innovation and speed to market
is the inescapable influence of global digitalization in all facets
of production-from specification to manufacturing to delivery.
"In a short period of time, the technological advancements this
industry has seen have been tremendous," says Riley. "It has
essentially removed any and all geographic and language barriers,
thus allowing us to compete on an unlimited global scale."
In addition, social media has brought suppliers even closer
to their customers, further increasing their expectations. "In
this day and age everything is a rush, so time is our biggest
challenge," says Horn.
To respond to increasing demands, Lexmark has taken steps
to expand manufacturing efficiencies, investing in new extrusion
capabilities, for instance. "Now we are prepared to meet and
exceed our customer's time crunch with four-week lead times."
Another effect: "Social media is bringing increased
transparency to the architecture and design industry," says Stacy
Walker, director of customer experience for Milliken's global
floorcovering division. "We are seeing customers from around
the world contact Milliken on Facebook for product requests and
to share photos of their installations of our collections."
Laura Roman, director of design for Milliken's hospitality
division, adds an important element to the discussion: that
while digitalization has raised the bar in some areas, exceptional
performance is still paramount for hospitality designers.
A lengthened period of time between renovations has only
enunciated the need for durability and sustainability in product
design.
Roman cites Milliken's newest addition to its étage® series,
Atsia, as an example of how the company is answering designers'
needs amid increasing demands on quality and quantity: the
collection enables designers to create custom floorcovering
designs while using existing product patterns.
"Our goal is to not simply follow the increased demands
brought with the digital age and ever-changing technology, but
to set the bar for what is possible in using technology in design,"
says Walker. "We want to help designers achieve their ideal
interior environments in the easiest way possible." ❙❘❚
