Talking with Lorraine Francis

New director of NEWH, Inc. Sustainable Hospitality
What's your current role in the
industry?
I'm director of hospitality
interiors at Gensler, Los Angeles.
I started at Gensler, then
returned in 2013 to oversee
the fi rm's multimillion-dollar
hospitality interiors business.
So you're a 'boomerang'-back where you started?
Yes! Having spent the fi rst 10 years of my career as an associate at
Gensler, returning is like coming home.
Where were you in between?
I had my own fi rm, Cadiz Collaboration, in southern California,

working for major hotel and resort brands on a wide range of
projects.
Why hotels?
I love working on hotels because they help create a community.
They develop a connection between people and their sense of
place. My design focus is to create community between the hotel
guest, employees, and the local community.
And what about your passion-sustainability?
I am very conscious of the potential impact my profession
as an architect and interior designer can have on the natural
and delicate ecosystem. Th rough an informed perspective, my
objective is to strike a satisfying balance between great design,
a cost-effective budget, and environmental awareness.
