NEWH - Winter 2015 - 24

Q&A

Meet William Stuart

Marketing communications for the NEWH, Inc.
board of directors, New York chapter vice president
of administration, and founder of Costantini Design

How did you become involved in NEWH?
NEWH is the preeminent professional network for the
hospitality industry, and it's getting better every year. We've
awarded more than $4 million in scholarships for students
in need and each year the awards are getting bigger and our
community is getting stronger. I started as the scholarship chair
for the New York chapter before moving into a vice president
role, and I am honored to have recently been invited to work on
marketing communications at the international level.
What has NEWH done for you, both personally and professionally?
The most interesting part of being a member of NEWH is where
those two worlds intersect. You can go to an event and expect
that you are going to see a particular client, but instead you end
up becoming friends with someone who does something similar
to you. Doing good work is fundamental for success, but putting
yourself out there is when the magic happens.
In your role with the New York chapter, what do you have planned
for the rest of 2015? What are you most looking forward to?
On November 8th, we are having my favorite event, the biannual
Product Runway competition. Over the summer months, we
pair up manufacturers with designers to create a wearable work
of art, and then we have a huge party to coincide with BDNY to
show off the work. It's one of our biggest fundraisers and always
sells out.
What were some of the highlights of the beginning of the year?
We have had such a great year for Toasty Tuesdays-our
monthly social event where we get a newly opened or renovated
hotel to host our members for cocktails and tours. Also our
Owners' Roundtable, in conjunction with Hospitality Design
magazine, was a great success; our attendees meet and interact
with hotel owners and operators to better understand the goals
and challenges of their work.

Tell us a bit about Costantini Design and what's new.
I founded Costantini with my wife in 2002, with a few furniture
designs and four standard fi nishes. Today, our collection
has more than 150 standard products in dozens of different
materials, and we've produced literally thousands of custom
pieces for some of the best hotels and restaurants all over the
world. We have a newly launched website, and our new print
binder is out now as well.
What is your business outlook for the next year or two?
The past few years have been amazing for us and our peers,
and I think it's going to continue. Part of it has to do with the
economy, of course, but we are at that point in our careers
where we have been honing our craft for over a decade, and we
are getting better at it. I'm really proud of my fellow chapter
members who may have been junior designers in 2006, and now
I see them with their own fi rms, designing whole hotels, and
getting the recognition they deserve.
Latest travel highlight?
My wife and I are avid sailors, and we recently got certified to
dive as well. I love a vacation on the beach, but I need to have
little missions that I can work on to contrast with the downtime.
Earlier this year some friends joined us on a catamaran in the
British Virgin Islands, and we had an amazing time with them.
Looking forward, my sister is getting married in Sicily in the
spring, and I can't wait to have our families out there.
Trend you are paying attention to in the industry?
I love the return to authenticity in materials. Owners are
becoming more cognizant of how faking something may not age
well or may be obvious to a more sophisticated clientele.
When you aren't working or at an NEWH event, where can we find
you?
Looking at art or checking out a new restaurant. ❙❘❚
