NEWH - Fall 2016 - 28

Q&A One-on-One with Sandy Banks NEWH director of mentoring and sales manager, P/Kaufmann Contract How did you become involved in NEWH? I walked into Dorrit St. John's office in 1984, about one year after I started working for P/Kaufmann Contract. She and Shelia Lohmiller told me of an idea they had for an organization to cater to the hospitality industry and specifically help women navigate its challenges and opportunities. I was one of a handful of women in P/Kaufmann Contract at the time and the task of competing in a world I was unfamiliar with was daunting. I was on board with the concept immediately, and the rest is history. I give deep thanks to Dorrit, Shelia, and Susan Spalding for implementing this idea that has grown to serve a 5,500-strong membership. What has NEWH done for you, both personally and professionally?  NEWH has provided me an opportunity to learn and meet people from a number of disciplines that all contribute to our hospitality world. Having been on the board in the past and now serving as director of mentoring, I constantly meet new people and hear new ideas. In your role as an NEWH director of mentorship, what are you looking forward to for the rest of the year and the beginning of 2017? We have developed a mentorship platform that will soon be implemented to serve our membership and students. We will be hosting webinars that will incorporate information on sustainability, education, and mentoring, so stay tuned. February 9th - 11th, 2017 we're having our biannual Leadership Conference, aptly themed Climb On. 28 Tell us about your company. Any recent initiatives or launches? I have had the good fortune to be employed with P/Kaufmann Contract for 33 years. Our 59-year-old company, and specifically our hospitality division, continues to grow and provide beautiful, quality products with integrity. Our fi nished product category and our digital printing business continue to show strong growth. What is your business outlook for the next year or two? I am very optimistic that our industry will stay strong for the remainder of 2016 and 2017. We all must continue to look forward and evolve with our ever-changing and consolidating industry. Latest travel highlight or plan?  I took an amazing trip to Costa Rica over the New Year and plan to travel next winter to either Patagonia or Namibia. ❙❘❚
