NEWH - Fall 2016 - 30

Q&A Getting to Know Ron McDaniel Dallas chapter president and principal at Paravars How did you become involved in NEWH? Prior to being a part of the NEWH Dallas board, I was aware of the organization but I always thought NEWH was for women only. I learned quickly that wasn't the case. I was actually 'drafted into service' by one of the outgoing directors! What has NEWH done for you, personally and professionally? I have been introduced to more industry peers than I ever thought possible, both locally and nationally. Serving as president of the Dallas chapter, as well as sitting on the national board of directors, has also provided me a sense of accomplishment that I have been able to affect change and assist in the growth of our design community. What were some of the highlights of the beginning of the year? Celebrating our 25th anniversary, the Dallas chapter has provided a yearlong array of events that are beneficial to our members. Our Next & Now event continues to provide students with portfolio review and mock interview feedback; the Scholarship Dinner and Life of Design Gala is the Dallas chapter's biggest event of the year culminating with the distribution of $40,000 in scholarship funds; and this year, we have a new program called E3 Mentoring that partners junior -level hospitality interior designers with senior-level interior designers, principals, and purchasing agents, intended to educate, engage, and elevate our junior designers. 30 Tell us a bit about your company. I have the pleasure of working alongside my partner, Roger Mathis on a daily basis. Forming Paravars four years ago was a natural progression as we sought to fulfill a need for design solutionists within our industry. We have created a full-service agency amassing a wide range of domestic and international manufacturers that help create stunning product everyday. Any trends you are paying attention to in the industry? Any you would wish would go away? The biggest trend we see happening is a back to basics approach with properties and designers focusing on local, authentic, and regional experiences for their guests. It is refreshing to see designers push their creative boundaries when incorporating the local fl air of towns, cities, or neighborhoods. One consistent trend that I wish would go away forever is very tight budgets! When you aren't working or at an NEWH event, where can we find you? Roger and I are fortunate to live in the heart of Dallas. At the end of the day, my favorite piece of real estate is to lounge at home with our cat, Dr. Nathan, an icy cold martini, and view of the city.  ❙❘❚
