Lighten Up
Ashley Lighting's three-decade evolution

n the 1980s, lighting for the
hospitality realm was primarily
sourced from dealers through
catalog sales. It was during this less
inspiring era, in 1986, that Jim Barber
walked into his house with a table lamp,
took it apart in front of his wife, Blake, and
proclaimed, "We can do this." Soon after,
in a small northeast Arkansas storefront,
the Barbers launched Ashley Lighting with
just three employees. Th irty years later, the
local operation has blossomed into a global
business propelled by the same mission.
"Despite structural changes in the company
and the evolution in products we provide,
our emphasis on quality and customer
satisfaction, the cornerstones to our
success, has remained constant," says Ron
Smith, Ashley Lighting's vice president.
From its now 70,000-square-foot
headquarters in Trumann, Arkansas-as
well as a 30,000-square-foot facility in
Dongguan, China-Ashley Lighting focuses
"on offering clean, sleek design that is guest
friendly," says Smith. The simple table lamps
with swing arms once clamored for have
now paved the way for fashionable pendants
and "high-tech options that provide task
and ambient lighting while serving as
charging stations for devices," Smith points
out. The USB ports conveniently found in
the bases of almost all of Ashley Lighting's
products appeal to smartphone-loving
business and leisure travelers alike.
