Celebrating future contributors to hospitality: NEWH scholarship recipients at BDwest and HD Expo
BDwest Awards
Hospitality Media Group (HMG) sponsors two $5,000
hospitality management scholarships awards for women at
BDNY and BDwest annually. Scarlett Schmitt, hospitality
management major from Kendall College was awarded her
scholarship during Boutique Design Power Players: Women
Leaders in Hospitality breakfast and panel discussion at
BDwest. At BDNY in 2016, Séura launched the Séura
Studio Series Design Competition, a lighted mirror design
competition. Colleen Smith received the most votes at
BDNY with her Deconstructed Deco entry. To honor
Keegan Coulter, Jeong Soo Kim, and Trisha Poole Scarlett Schmitt andTrisha
Smith's winning project, Séura donated a $3,000 NEWH

scholarship in Smith's name, a new scholarship for NEWH.
Louis Jeong Soo Kim, an environmental design major
from the Art Center College of Design was awarded the NEWH Studio Series Scholarship, honoring Colleen Smith. Kim and Séura
were recognized at Boutique Design Power Players: Women Leaders in Hospitality breakfast and panel discussion at BDwest. "Being
awarded an NEWH scholarship was not just a financial help but proof of community support from fellow designers and artists. The
scholarship helped me when I was on the verge of having to take a leave of absence. It gave me unyielding motivation and courage
to continue on as a designer," says Kim, who is currently working as a furniture designer at Cory Grosser and Associates, a boutique
studio in Pasadena, California.

HD Expo
JunJie Liao, an interior architecture student from Woodbury University,
Burbank, was awarded the $5,000 NEWH Harvey Nudelman Scholarship
at HD Expo. This annual scholarship is presented in honor of former
Fabricut president, the late Harvey Nudelman and sponsored by
Fabricut Contract & FR One. Liao was also honored for his winning
team-project, The Norm Hotel, through the NEWH Sustainable Design
Competition, receiving an additional $2,500 scholarship.
The NEWH Product Design Competition is a lavatory faucet design
competition, offering a $4,000 scholarship sponsored by Symmons.
The competition is open to hospitality interior design or architecture
students and the winner receives paid airfare and lodging to the awards
breakfast at HD Expo. A prototype of the winning student's design is
showcased at the Symmons booth during the show. The 2017 recipient,
Erin Bailey, an interior design major from the University of North Texas,
was honored during the NEWH Annual Expo Breakfast: The Young
Entrepreneurs during HD Expo.
The NEWH Dallas Chapter first recognized Bailey in 2016, awarding her
a $2,500 NEWH Dallas Chapter scholarship and a $5,000 Live with Passion
Scholarship, in memory of
Turner A. Duncan Jr. Bailey has
now entered the industry and is
currently working at MatchLine
Design Group in Dallas. She
says she's honored to receive
these scholarships, adding,
"The task of applying my skills
expanded my view of how I can
contribute to the industry."
