NEWH Sustainable Hospitality Design Competition

T

he 11th in a series, the NEWH Sustainable
Hospitality Design Competition provides
students with the opportunity to highlight their design
skills while using the very best in sustainable design
products and practices. The competition criteria
changes year to year: the 2016-2017 competition
focused on a sustainable guest experience through
a co-living concept design. Industry judges are
selected annually to review the top candidates. This
year's judges were: Becca Dobosh, SERA; Michele
Machado, HI Portland Hawthorne Sustainable Travel
International, Hostelling International USA; and Dr.
Jane Nichols, High Point University. The competition
was sponsored by Applied Textiles and JLF Lone
Meadow, a founding sponsor.

Francene Ray

Francene Ray, interior design major from the University
of Idaho, earned the $5,000 undergraduate scholarship
for her winning design, Microhood: A Creative Co-Living
Community. Ray says, "Hospitality is best achieved when
the designers can put themselves in the users' shoes and
think intentionally about the resources, program elements,
lighting, and overall aesthetics necessary in creating spaces
that foster comfortability and genuine communities across
a diverse range of people."

Arkgo Chen and JunJie
Liao were awarded the NEWH
Sustainable Hospitality Design
Competition graduate award, each
winning a $2,500 scholarship
for their team project, the
Norm Hotel. Liao, an interior
architecture student from Woodbury University in Burbank and Chen, an
architecture major from University of British Columbia, both study architecture
with a focus on interior and exterior practice. Liao says, "NEWH offered
the opportunity to bring us together by entering the NEWH Sustainable
Hospitality Design Competition. We have achieved a good result with high
efficiency because we value internet technology and are willing to break the
traditional ways of collaboration." Chen adds, "It is amazing to be awarded for
something I love to do. The NEWH scholarship strengthens my motivation in
pursuing a career in the field of design, in particular in hospitality design. This
scholarship opens the door to acknowledging new innovative ideas that may
play an important role in the future of hospitality culture."
