Recognizing NEWH, Inc. Scholarship Recipients

$7,500 NEWH ICON of Industry Scholarship recipient, 2016, sponsored
by NEWH, Inc.

Tyson Baker
Interior Design, Maryville University
Tyson Baker received the $7,500 NEWH ICON of Industry
scholarship, sponsored by NEWH, at the 36th annual Gold Key
Awards Gala at the Waldorf Astoria in New York, in conjunction
with HX: The Hotel Experience and BDNY. Baker's passion for
entertainment and hospitality stemmed from a childhood hero,
Walt Disney, who "created spaces that transported people to a
different time and place." After graduating high school, Baker
took a dancer position with Carnival Cruise Lines to perform
in nightly shows aboard the company's fleet of ships and
learned firsthand the transformative effect of entertainment
and hospitality on guests. He later enrolled in an interior
design program at Maryville University and became active in
IIDA and ASID student chapters, working on fundraisers and
events and seeking mentorship from design professionals. His
plan is to pursue hospitality and themed entertainment design
upon graduation. "Not only will the financial benefit [of this
scholarship] allow me to continue to focus on my studies and
alleviate financial stress, it will give me a greater exposure in
the hospitality design industry," says Baker. "As a recipient,
I know I will be a great representative and ambassador for
hospitality design both now and throughout my career."

Breanna Hendrickson
Hospitality Business Management, Washington
State University
Breanna Hendrickson was awarded the $5,000 NEWH
Women Leaders Hospitality Management Scholarship,
sponsored by HMG, at the Boutique Design Power Players:
Women Leaders in Hospitality Breakfast and Panel
Discussion in New York during BDNY. Hendrickson has
always been ahead of the game: She participated in a
program called Running Start, which allowed her to attend
college at the age of 16, and obtained a job in the hospitality
field at a local restaurant around the same time. She has
since worked as host for a luxury B&B and has interned with
Holland America Group, serving the Holland America Line,
Princess Cruises, Seabourn, and P&O Australia as she learns
about the hospitality industry. Hendrickson was nominated
by a hospitality professor to be an Ambassador of the Carson
College of Business, where she represents and promotes
Washington State University by hosting and engaging with
donors and the advisory board. Hendrickson aims to work
in the cruise line industry upon graduating with a degree in
hospitality business management. "At the age of 8, I knew
on my first cruise that Princess Cruises was the starting and
ending goal for my future career," she says.
