A Look into the
Future Guyana
Guyana is well positioned for future success: it has a talented
English-speaking workforce, a stable political and economic
system, and a location that positions it well to leverage growth
across the Americas. In order to maintain its viability for increased
direct foreign investment, Guyana will continue to develop on
these core strengths.
"We have worked very hard to ensure we place the Guyanese
economy in a more resilient, more robust position, says Dr.

Singh. "Things such as a strong financial sector, strong physical
infrastructure, good social services, all of which lead to better
social and economic outcomes.
"
Having achieved universal primary education, Guyana is now
zeroing in on universal secondary education. It is also supporting
a robust cohort of post-secondary institutions, including two
newly-established technical institutes, as well as a greater
emphasis on mathematics, engineering, and ICT at the University
of Guyana. Thousands of persons are trained annually in technical
and vocational areas.

"We recognize that economic and social development will
only be achieved if we have an educated Guyanese population,
which is why we invest more in education as a sector than
anything else, says Dr. Singh. "We have brought university

education within the reach of more Guyanese than has ever
been the case before. The government will also continue

to be active in growing Guyana's profile abroad. This means
pushing for more open trade, and reinforcing the agreements
that already exist across the region. It also means pressing
ahead with the country's Action Plan, which is specifically
geared to improving the country's standing in World Bank's
Doing Business Indicator.
