Claimed for Spain by Christopher Columbus, Jamaica became a British colony in 1655 and achieved full independence on August 6th, 1962. The Constitution established a parliamentary system based on the United Kingdom model where executive power is vested in the cabinet led by the Prime Minister. Jamaica has gone a long way since then and has recently elected a new female prime minister focusing on business-friendliness as a priority for the new administration. Prime Minister Portia SimpsonMiller was inaugurated into o ce on January 5th 2012. She holds a spot on Time Magazine’s Top 100 most inﬂuential people list, and is the ﬁrst woman in this role.

Becky Stockhausen Executive Director of the American Chamber of Commerce Jamaica expressed that PM Simpson-Miller has already taken strides in making the government more accessible to business. “We have already begun working with the new administration in reaching out to the business community and to improve on sound policies according to private sector needs.”

Urban Renewal Act - Targets persons or organizations that facilitate or carry out urban development: Relief from income tax, stamp duty, and transfer tax given for transactions geared towards urban development, in Kingston and Montego Bay. Accelerated Depreciation/Special Capital Allowance Targets data processing/system development businesses, 50% of the full cost of any new machinery in the year of purchase A further 50% in the second year.
