Educator of the Year Announced Marsha Giesler, public education officer of the Downers Grove Fire Department in Illinois, has been named NFPA’s 2012 Fire and Life Safety Educator of the Year. Giesler will receive a $1,000 honorarium and travel accommodations to an award presentation at NFPA’s Conference & Expo, June 11–14 in Las Vegas. Giesler’s accomplishments include visiting 17 public and private elementary schools each month and routinely conducting evacuation drills in her community. She’s also made NFPA’s fire safety education programs, including Risk Watch® and the Learn Not to Burn Preschool Program®, the cornerstone of her educational outreach. She also wrote the 400-page reference book Fire and Life Safety Educator. Massachusetts Fire Department Receives $5,000 Grant NFPA awarded the Brockton Fire Department in Massachusetts the 2012 Rolf H. Jensen Memorial Public Education Grant. The $5,000 grant will support the High-Rise Apartment Safety and Emergency Preparedness Program, the department’s fire and life safety public education initiative. The fire department will team up with the Brockton Housing Authority and the Brockton Emergency Management Agency to provide public education at high-rises and plans to expand outreach to other housing developments.
