Caufield Named Mid-Atlantic Regional Director John Caufield of rochester, New york, has been named the new mid-Atlantic regional director for NFPA. Caufield will focus on improving fire, building, and life safety by working with state and local authorities to promote NFPA services and the adoption of NFPA codes and standards in Washington D.C. and the seven states in his region: Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Virginia, New york, and West Virginia. He has more than 25 years of experience in the fire service, and most recently was chief of the City of rochester Fire Department. Caulfield is active in a number of professional associations, including the International Association of Fire Chiefs and the New york State Fire Chiefs Association. In 2009 he was a fellowship recipient in the Senior Executives in State and local Government Program at Harvard university. Harvard Fellowships Announced Four senior fire officials were recently awarded fellowships to participate in the Senior Executives in State and local Government Program at Harvard university. The fellowships are co-sponsored by NFPA, the u.S. Department of Homeland Security’s u.S. Fire Administration, the International Association of Fire Chiefs, and the International Fire Service Training Association. Awardees include Claude Beauchamp, director of operations, Quebec National Fire Academy, laval, Quebec, Canada; Martha Ellis, division chief, Salt lake City Fire Department, Salt lake City, utah; Matthew James Fratus, fire chief, City of rialto Fire Department, rialto, California; and Bertral Washington, fire chief, Clark County Fire Department, las Vegas, Nevada. The three-week program focuses on ensuring that public officials are equipped to be effective leaders, through learning experiences both inside and outside the classroom. NFPA rECENTly DEBuTED the Electric Vehicle Emergency Field Guide, which was developed with assistance from vehicle manufacturers and provides safety information for emergency responders on all current makes and models of hybrid and electric vehicles. The field guide offers tips on “sizing up” vehicles involved in an incident and initiating a proper response. Other topics include vehicle identification, securing and disabling a vehicle, and emergency operations. Guides can be purchased at the “Training and Products” section of evsafetytraining.org.  Starting in July, NFPA’s Electric Vehicle Safety Training course will be available online for $19 per participant. Fire departments can apply for FEMA’s AFG program to cover the cost of this online training, or to receive an instructor-led classroom training course.  Grant applications must be received by July 6.
