Legal Considerations and Administration

NOTICE TO ATHLETE
You have been identified as possibly having one or more of the following conditions. It is very important to have
this confirmed and followed up by your regular family physician. For supplemental research, check
www.webmd.com.
❑ HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE
Your blood pressure today was higher than normal. It is important
to see your doctor to have this evaluated because high blood pressure
can lead to stroke, heart disease, kidney failure and vision loss.
While your condition is not life threatening at this time, your physician
must clear you before you will be allowed to participate in sports.
What is high blood pressure? As blood flows from the heart
out to the blood vessels, it creates pressure against the blood vessel
walls. Your blood pressure is a measure of this pressure. When it
goes above a certain point, it is called high blood pressure. It is
common to not feel any symptoms with high blood pressure.
Many things can affect blood pressure, including certain medicines
and the stress of a doctor's visit. Most high blood pressure, however,
cannot be cured. The good news is it can be controlled by such
things as weight loss, eating less salt, and exercise. If this isn't
enough, medications can be added.
❑ ALLERGY/ANAPHYLAXIS
You have been identified as having either an allergy or an
anaphylactic reaction to bee stings and/or insect bites. As this can
be a life threatening condition, you will not be allowed to participate
in sports until you have been further evaluated by your physician.
What is anaphylaxis? Anaphylaxis is a severe allergic reaction
that happens rapidly and can cause diffuse swelling, flushing, hives,
and difficulty breathing. It can progress to shock, collapse, seizures,
or death if left untreated. There are medications that are used to
treat this condition, and your doctor will determine what your condition
requires.
❑ SCOLIOSIS
You have been found to have scoliosis on your exam today.
Although this is not a life threatening condition, you will not be allowed
to participate in sports until you have been further evaluated by your
physician.
What is scoliosis? Scoliosis is also known as curvature of the
spine. It is frequently discovered during routine physicals in children
and young adults and is more common in girls. Some people will
complain of low back aches or fatigue, while others will notice one
shoulder looks higher than the other. Most cases can be treated with
exercises and bracing.
❑ HEART MURMURS
A heart murmur was heard on your exam today. While most
heart murmurs are not serious, some can cause fainting, heart failure,
or even death. Therefore, it is important to be seen by your doctor
to determine risks. You will not be allowed to participate in sports
until your physician determines it is safe.
What is a heart murmur? A heart murmur is a sound produced
by a change in the flow of blood within the heart. It can be caused

by an increase in blood flow caused by a fever, which will go away
with time. Many murmurs, however, are related to disease or damage
of one or more of the heart valves. The valves can be too tight or
too loose. Each will produce a certain noise that can be heard during
an exam. If left untreated, this can produce too much stress on the
heart and cause it to fail. Your doctor will decide what else needs to
be done.
❑ ASTHMA
You have been identified as having asthma during your exam
today. Many top athletes have asthma. You need to work with your
doctor to come up with a treatment plan that allows you to breathe
easy at all times. Because poorly controlled asthma can be life
threatening, you will not be allowed to participate in sports until you
are cleared by your physician.
What is asthma? Asthma is a disease in which airflow in and
out of the lungs may be blocked by muscle squeezing, swelling, and
excess mucus. This results in wheezing and/or coughing. An asthma
"attack" is often triggered by things such as pollen, mold, dust, strong
odors (perfume, paint), tobacco smoke, changes in weather, colds,
and certain medications.
Exercise can also cause asthma symptoms. Many non-asthmatics
can get chest tightness, coughing, and wheezing after exercise.
These symptoms can be easily treated with an inhaled medication
that helps to open up the airways. Even if you only have symptoms
with exercise, it is important that you are tested for asthma because
you may need medicines at other times as well.
❑ DIABETES
You have been identified as having diabetes during your exam
today. Untreated, diabetes can lead to heart attacks, strokes,
blindness, amputation, and kidney failure. It is important that you
work closely with your doctor to keep your blood sugars under control.
Because exercise can lower blood sugars, you will need to be seen
by your physician before being allowed to participate in sports. Your
doctor may need to make adjustments in your medications and
monitor your body's response to exercise.
What is diabetes? Diabetes mellitus is a serious, chronic
condition of high blood sugar. Some people are diagnosed in
childhood, these people need insulin shots to control their sugars.
More common is the adult-onset type of diabetes, which can
sometimes be managed by oral medications alone. Important ways
to control your sugars include following the diet prescribed, exercising,
maintaining your weight, and seeing your doctor regularly.
Some symptoms of diabetes include frequent urination,
unexplained weight loss, and extreme thirst. Early stages of the
disease may be without symptoms. That is why it is important to be
seen by a doctor.
