CHAPTER 2

|

Legal Considerations and Administration

6. Become familiar with the products and supplies used. Read all manufacturer

warnings and disclaimers, and make sure the athletes or patients are aware
of them.
Important warnings posted on exercise equipment in an athletic training
room or gym may read, "Caution: Stop exercise if you feel pain, faint, or short
of breath." Football helmets have warning stickers placed on the outside to
warn players of inappropriate uses of the helmet as well as risks associated
with its use. One example reads: "Do not use this helmet to butt, ram, or spear
an opposing player. This is a violation of the football rules and can result in
severe head, brain, or neck injuries, paralysis, or death to you and possible
injury to your opponent. There is a risk these injuries may also occur as a
result of accidental contact without intent to butt, ram, or spear. No helmet
Ferris State University
can prevent all such injuries."
7. Develop an emergency action plan for every sport.

Make sure everyone understands their role in the emergency action plan so
that they will be prepared to act when the need arises. These plans should be
rehearsed at games and practices, during both daytime and in the evening, and
should include procedures for home and away events. These practices must be
recorded and all participants must sign a form stating that they participated in
the exercise. Also, make sure you put the plan in writing and distribute it to all
participants; unwritten or undistributed plans are doomed to fail. Remember
that if the plan is not in writing, it does not exist. In any emergency situation,
flexibility and adaptability are key; expect the unexpected. Emergency action
plans are discussed in greater detail in Chapter 4.
8. Consider all the sports involved in the athletic program, not

just the ones that are conducted on a court or field, when
developing emergency action plans.
Sports such as golf and cross-country can be difficult, but
not impossible, to work into the plan because the distances
covered in these activities complicates supervision of the athletes. Also take into account the types of training involved in
the various sports. For example, wrestlers are often sent out to
run 5 miles, creating the same supervision challenges as in golf
or cross-country (Figure 2-14).
9. Follow appropriate procedures on all injury assessments.

Begin with the least invasive method of gathering
information and progress to moving to the injury, only if
appropriate. Above all, avoid any actions that may increase
the severity of the injury (see Chapter 4). If at any time you
feel uncomfortable about the injury/situation, or feel the
treatment may be beyond your abilities, elicit the help of a
superior or call 911 for the emergency medical services to
elicit the next level of care.
2-14 | Distance sports, like golf
and cross-country, can be difficult
to supervise, but this aspect of risk
management cannot be overlooked.

10. Ensure supervision of all athletes during treatment modalities,

whether in the clinic or on the sidelines, and make sure those
performing the treatment modalities are aware of any health
conditions the athlete may have, such as diabetes or asthma
(Figure 2-15).
