CHAPTER 3

|

If untreated, it can burst into the abdominal cavity, which can lead to a serious inflammation called peritonitis that can be fatal unless treated.
Symptoms: If the appendix becomes inflamed, symptoms similar to those of an
intestinal flu virus may result. Symptoms include pain in the lower right quadrant of
the abdomen, nausea, vomiting, fever, and either diarrhea or constipation. Symptoms
of appendicitis usually appear suddenly-over a period of 2 to 3 hours. Additionally,
when the symptoms are caused by appendicitis, the athlete will usually find some
relief by bringing the knees to the chest. The sudden onset of abdominal pain should
always be treated with great caution because if the appendix bursts, the infection will
spread into the abdominal cavity. This can be life-threatening.
Immediate Treatment: Contact EMS. Surgery is often required.
Follow-up Treatment: Make sure the physician's orders are followed.
Prevention: This is not a preventable condition.

Insect Stings and Bites
Insect stings and bites can result in venom being injected into the skin. This can
cause pain and sometimes trigger an allergic reaction. The severity will depend on the
sensitivity of the individual and how many times he or she was bitten.
Symptoms: Symptoms may include nausea, difficulty breathing, swelling, hives,
feeling of faintness or dizziness, and swollen tongue.
Immediate Treatment: Remove the stinger with the use of tweezers or by scraping gently across the skin with a fingernail or credit card. Wash the area with soap
and water. Apply ice to decrease the swelling. If the person has a reaction or has
had one before, contact EMS. If symptoms increase, such as difficulty breathing or
wheezing, tightness in the throat or feeling the airway is closing, anxiety or dizziness,
or loss of consciousness, inject epinephrine immediately. This is done by pulling off
the gray end cap, which will open up to a red cap. Put the red cap against the middle
of the thigh (this can go through pants). Press down hard until the needle enters the
thigh, and hold in place for a slow count of 10.
Prevention: Know your athletes who have allergies and make sure you have an
EpiPenĀ® available.

Genetic Heart Conditions
On rare occasions, an athlete may have a genetic heart defect and not be aware of it.
The presence of such a defect may cause the athlete to suffer cardiac arrest with or
without a precipitating injury. Under such conditions, the physical exertion that is
put forth in practice or play may stress the heart muscle to the point that it is unable
to meet the demands of the body, causing a myocardial infarction (a heart attack). On
the other hand, a direct blow to the chest may cause damage to a heart that is already
weakened or compromised in some way, such as a heart with a valve defect. These
instances are quite rare, but it is important to remember that they can occur and to
be prepared for them.
