ovember is National Hospice/ Palliative Care Month, a time when members all across the country focus special attention on educating their communities about end-of-life care.
Why a Quilt? Historically, quilts were made by a group of people and the process of quilt making was a time for community, socializing, and sharing of opinions and emotions. Quilts were made for special occasions, and just as quilts were given to celebrate the birth of a newborn, they were also made to memorialize a loved one. When individual quilt blocks—each beautiful in their own right—are assembled, they provide warmth and comfort and represent love, care and compassion—the very essence of end-of-life care. If you look closely at each year’s design, you will also see that each features the familiar lotus flower. A key component of the NHPCO logo, the lotus represents the physical, psychological, social, and spiritual aspects of end-of-life care. To help mark this annual celebration, NHPCO started the tradition of creating a “hospice quilt” 10 years ago. To commemorate the inaugural event, a replica of the first quilt was presented to President Bill Clinton on October 6, 2000 by the quilt’s creator, Lisa Shannon (left, in photo), and NHPCO board chair at the time, Claire Tehan (right).

Each year’s quilt is featured on a display ad which NHPCO creates specifically for National Hospice/Palliative Care Month. However, the quilt also inspires the theme and design of the many other promotional and outreach materials that NHPCO creates for use by members all year long.
