continued from previous page • Through NHPCO’s program, Caring Connections, distributed over 400,000 brochures, advance directives and information directly to consumers, free of charge. • Transitioned to a state-ofthe-art membership database that will offer members more control over their individual records. • Launched the Mary J. Labyak Institute for Innovation to develop and promote new strategies to ensure the best possible care of patients and families through cuttingedge programming. (See the sidebar at right.) • Partnered with UK-based Help the Hospices and other members of the international community to develop the digital resource, ehospice (see November NewsLine). NHPCO is preparing for the launch of ehospice-USA in early 2013. • Added more than 40 new online courses to NHPCO’s End-of-Life Online. • Continued to hold quarterly Executive Leadership Conversations, a series of one-hour conference calls for senior leaders in which NHPCO president/CEO, Don Schumacher, and an expert guest discuss topical issues. (The 2012 topics were based on feedback from an executive poll conducted earlier in the year.) The Mary J. Labyak Institute for Innovation Officially launched in September 2012 by NHPCO, the Institute is designed to continue the work of the late-hospice pioneer, Mary Labyak. Its initial work will include: Convening experts within the field and beyond to create new care models and practices; Publishing articles, continuum briefings and other communications aimed at promoting and cultivating innovation; Identifying, packaging and disseminating promising practices and innovative programs; Infusing hospice values into the ongoing work of The National Center and external stakeholders. Visit the NHPCO website to learn more. • Partnered with MedicAlert to bring advance directives to MedicAlert clients. • Referred more than 9,000 people to NHPCO member hospices in response to inquiries from the Caring Connections Helpline. Innovation • Held NHPCO’s first virtual conference—the Volunteer Leadership Virtual Conference—which drew attendance from 500 programs in all 50 states— and 5,000 volunteers on a single day. (See October NewsLine.) • Invested in a complete redesign of the NHPCO website that included reorganization of the content for easier and faster access and new features to help members personalize their site experience.
