NHDD is April 16:
Let’s Keep Up the Pace!
April 16, 2013 will be the six-year
anniversary of National Healthcare
Decisions Day (NHDD), a national
day of observance that was
established to inspire, educate and
empower the public and providers
about the importance of advance
care planning.
So What Can Hospices Do?
Anything and everything to help
raise awareness of this important
day and what it stands for. For
example:
• Link to the NHDD Video:
NHDD organizers created a
wonderful three-minute video
in 2012 that is still very relevant
today. Consider sharing it via
social media or posting a link
to it on your website.
• Follow NHDD on Twitter,
using the hashtag “@NHDD.”
• Host an Event: Ask your local
bar association to provide a
volunteer speaker and host
an educational event for the
public at a nearby library,
school or church.
• Distribute Information: Ask
your volunteers to hand out
advance directive forms and
other information at the movie
theater as people leave a film.
Do Your Efforts Make
a Difference?
Absolutely. Public awareness
has improved steadily each year
since NHDD was established. For
example, in 2012:
• Over 110 national organizations
and 1,100 state and local
organization participated.
• National and local media
helped spread the word, with
articles or columns appearing
in The New York Times, Wall
Street Journal, USA Today,
CNN, the Huffington Post,
LIVESTRONG, and others.
• Social media lent a powerful
hand. The NHDD Facebook
page had more than 35,000
visits during April alone, while
NHDD supporters generated
interest through their posts,
tweets and releases. (For
example, LIVESTRONG singlehandedly reached more than
1.6 million people through its
posts, while Twitter generated
over one million NHDD
“impressions” between
April 11 and 18.)
