Hansen: We track globally airline and hotel and car. We’re working with Amex as a pilot client in their efforts to develop a carbon emissions reporting solution. Lichtenstein: We were considering TRX. Hansen: TRX is using cargo factors from one airline and applying them to other airlines. Our scientists will take the aircraft type, because that is concrete. The carriers need to give more data for that to be effective. BTN: Was there a buy-in aspect to your best practice? Witherspoon: We’re still so high-touch, but we are directed from the top down through cost initiatives coming from Vivendi. Although they are being directed to do what we tell them, we are still going out to do training and communications. We do a lot of extra services to bring them along. We get a lot of pushback. It takes them maybe three months and then they come around. There are still a lot of costs associated with training. BTN: Are there any pitfalls that you would warn someone about if they were attempting to replicate your best practice? Chang: I don’t worry about the pitfalls. We just sort of plunge in there and do it. When it comes to advice, you really need to know what you want. You need to do your homework, that’s certain. You need to get senior management’s buy-in. We always develop a business case. Everybody wants to save money, so we usually don’t have an issue there. We just took on a challenge and met it. Hansen: I think it’s just the right thing to do. We have to do something and everybody makes a difference. I would encourage everybody to do it to some extent. Chang: Do you think it’s time to encourage people to get educated on that? Hansen: I am really lucky because I have all these experts to draw on.
