GM’s air volume last year considerably increased from 2006 levels, up nearly 38 percent companywide, with U.S.-booked volume rising more than 23 percent. The company last year signed its first global airline alliance contract with Star Alliance, and this year is considering cost-containment initiatives, with one possibility a denial of business class for most travelers on transatlantic flights. Meanwhile, GM for the first time in 2007 broadened the scope of its GetThere booking tool beyond the United States, piloting it in the United Kingdom and Germany. The company this year is pushing to further increase U.S. online booking adoption, which last year sat at 60 percent of applicable transactions. GM has more than 284,000 employees throughout the world and manufacturing operations in 33 countries. With its business travel increasingly including emerging markets as destinations, the company is conducting safety audits in several locations. American Express provides GM corporate card services outside the United States, but GM uses a Citibank MasterCard in its home country.
