U.S. booked air volume increased by 6.3 percent compared with levels reported in 2006. U.S. T&E spending, however, decreased by 32.5 percent and companywide T&E was down 43.3 percent. The beverage and snack food conglomerate saw the benefits of a number of consolidation and new technology efforts implemented the year before. Having switched to the Cliqbook online booking tool in 2006, PepsiCo subsequently increased its online adoption to 78 percent in 2007. Travelers both in and out of the United States also report expenses through the Concur tool. Following consolidation of air and hotel suppliers in 2006, PepsiCo in 2007 reviewed and renegotiated its preferred supplier agreements. The company also increased its hotel segmentation opportunities. BCD Travel remains the consolidated agency for PepsiCo’s U.S. travelers. Both American Express and HRG, with which PepsiCo consolidated operations in 23 countries in the EMEA and Asia/Pacific regions in 2006, handle travelers outside of the United States. American Express also is PepsiCo’s supplier of choice for its corporate card program. This year, PepsiCo plans to continue the initiatives it pursued in 2007. In addition, the company aims to get an even tighter control on T&E spending through agency reporting, its online booking tool and expense management. >>Oil and petrochemical giant Royal Dutch Shell in 2007 and 2008 continued expanding its managed travel program to more of the countries in which it does business. Shell’s 2007 U.S. booked air volume—which dropped by 6 percent from 2006 levels—comprised less than one-quarter of its total air spending. Following a global request for proposals, Shell last year expanded its preferred hotel program to more than 800 in more than 360 cities in 80 countries. The company this year is developing a global meetings policy, with an eye toward a possible 2009 implementation, as part of a larger effort to create a global strategic meetings management program. Shell also is reviewing global airline and online booking contracts. It uses KDS self-booking tools companywide and has a 40 percent adoption rate for applicable U.S. transactions. Shell uses Citibank corporate cards worldwide, and ProMaster, an expense reporting tool developed by Australian technology firm Inlogik in the United States. Elsewhere, Shell uses SAP for expense reporting. A new primary carrier program also was implemented. The company tightened policy language last year and added a contractor policy, which requires using a third-party diversity agency that shares data with consolidated U.S. agency American Express. In 2008, the company plans to tweak its online booking program and continue the implementation and growth of its meetings program >>In 2007, Wells Fargo’s U.S booked air volume decreased by $9 million from 2006. Wells Fargo Bank, the fifth-largest in the United States, manages its travel expenditures separately from, but negotiates on behalf of the other operating divisions of Wells Fargo & Co.: Wells Fargo Home Mortgage and Wells Fargo Financial.
