Of its 2007 U.S. booked air volume, 80 percent was spent on domestic travel. In 2008, it switched to HRG as its consolidated global travel management company, with implementation planned through 2008 and 2009. Wachovia also plans to initiate hotel city caps in specific locations, and focus on getting its employees to comply with policy and use preferred vendors and the company-approved online booking tool. This year, the company combined its transient and group spending and selected vendors from an enterprise focus. With its larger transient program, it now holds meetings using the same preferred vendors as for individual business travel. Some lines of business have made more stringent policy decisions, such as lowering the grade of hotel selection and slashing travel budgets. Wachovia’s employees use the Cliqbook online booking tool for 90 percent to 92 percent of the transactions for which online booking is possible. With its transition to HRG, the company also is beginning to use the online tool for simple international transactions. Wachovia’s primary corporate card provider was MasterCard. The company’s U.S. booked air volume will rise another $8 million this year following the acquisition of A.G. Edwards. In 2007, the company continued its efforts from the year before to aggressively shift share to its four preferred hotel chains. Hoffmann-La Roche implemented BCD Travel as its consolidated U.S. agency in late 2005. BCD now provides travel management services for North America, South America and Europe. HRG is its primary provider elsewhere. In 2007, the company negotiated its global airline contracts and completed a request for information for U.S. ground transportation services. Roche operates through two major divisions in the United States: Pharmaceutical, including Hoffmann-La Roche and Roche Palo Alto, and Diagnostics, which includes Roche Molecular Systems and Roche Diagnostic Corp. Each has a separate policy regarding use of the online booking tool. The Diagnostics division, which mandates the use of the tool, has a nearly 80 percent adoption rate, about twice that of the Pharmaceutical division, which does not have a mandate in place. The divisions also each have their own card programs. The Hoffmann-La Roche division issues American Express cards to 3,500 cardholders. It plans to increase online booking tool adoption and to partner with Intel’s telepresence team to create awareness of travel alternatives. The company also will be evaluating the use of and pushing volume to preferred carriers. In response to the Duty of Care law the United Kingdom enacted this year, the company has added a section to the policy regarding traveler fatigue, recommending employees use a taxi rather than renting a car after flying a certain number of hours. The company uses American Express Business Travel as its consolidated travel agency in the United States and uses American Express as its primary card vendor. >>Pharmaceutical giant Merck & Co. in 2007 launched its first global travel policy in more than 50 countries, allowing for more consistency throughout the world and featuring requirements to book through the appropriate corporate agency and use Merck’s American Express corporate card, which it is in the process of deploying globally. The policy also includes stricter rules regarding permissible class of airline service and a requirement that approval from a division head is needed should 25 people travel together. Global efforts led Merck’s travel management strategy in 2007, including the centralization of all support functions throughout the company, which will benefit a developing global agency strategy. Amex handles Merck’s U.S. agency needs, but Carlson Wagonlit Travel, HRG and independent providers service international travel. Merck deepened its travel organization with the hiring of regional travel leaders for Asia/Pacific and EMEA. Merck in 2007 also debuted a worldwide airline strategy that includes new global airline contracts. The firm’s 2007 U.S. booked air volume increased by about 22 percent, year over year.
