Asia/Pacific, along with Europe, the Middle East and Africa, is the focus of a current Medtronic effort to increase online booking use. The company uses Amadeus E-Travel for self-booking outside of the United States and GetThere in its home country. The company last year cut its U.S.-booked air volume by nearly 6 percent from 2006 levels. Its global air volume, however, increased by more than 11 percent during the same period. Medtronic in 2008 also is turning its attention to its hotel program, as the company examines ways to increase preferred hotel compliance and drive further value through policy and negotiations. Companywide, however, T&E spending remained steady at $350 million. This year, Wyeth aims to reduce its travel costs significantly by enforcing recommended policy changes. Such changes under consideration include a pre-trip authorization program and mandating preferred hotel bookings through Carlson Wagonlit Travel. Carlson Wagonlit Travel is the company’s primary agency, handling 96 percent of domestic air bookings as well as many of those outside of the United States. Travelers use CWT’s Horizon online booking tool, although Wyeth this year is issuing requests for proposals to select a preferred self-booking tool. It also will select a preferred car rental company. In addition, Wyeth is now in the bidding process for a global corporate card and is working on data consolidation. Currently, U.S. travelers use a U.S. Bank-issued corporate card, while travelers outside the United States are not on a corporate card program. >>Global technology services firm EDS last year continued to refine travel management processes with the implementation of new traveler services, refined policies and meetings management efforts, while furthering the reach and speed of the travel program through global travel management automation. Meetings management kept the travel department busy last year, as EDS implemented a global Web-based meetings registration tool, a global meetings tracking and reporting system and a revised global meetings policy. The company is continuing to bolster the management of corporate meetings through enhancements to its registration form this year that include an approval process and the capture of more detailed data. EDS last year improved traveler compliance and gained savings by implementing a global travel scorecard. THE CORPORATE TRAVEL 100 The IT service provider re-launched its global travel Web site and continues to work this year on centralizing travel-related services and information through its interactive travel portal. The company also is soliciting traveler feedback through a group e-mail system, and gauging travel service perceptions with a biannual travel agency survey. The company last year integrated International SOS travel security offerings into its global travel program. To ensure the quality, safety and cost effectiveness of its hotel program, EDS last year conducted more than 120 hotel site inspections throughout the world. The company last summer gained quicker response time through its booking tool after rolling out a more user-friendly interface. The company’s U.S.-based travelers last year booked more than 80 percent of their air travel transactions through the GetThere booking tool. The company this year plans to introduce self-booking in France, Germany, Spain and Portugal, as well as a modified tool in China. The company, a long-time adopter of automated pre-trip approval, rolled out its AEON automated pre-trip system to Japan, China and Hong Kong. The company uses an internally developed expense reporting tool in the United States, while using SAP in other regions. EDS this year is examining its business class air policy, and last year restricted first class air travel to trips with senior leadership approval, while allowing for first or business class rail fares for journeys longer than three hours. The company encourages a Saturdaynight stay only if it offsets the cost of an additional hotel night.
