In addition to several domestic preferred carriers, including American and Continental, AT&T has a lowest logical airfare policy in place. AT&T has achieved a healthy online booking adoption rate and also has implemented a central meetings registration desk to ensure it captures all meetings data. AT&T, the largest U.S. wireless carrier, also provides telephone service to 22 states, including California, Illinois and Texas. Its network of subsidiaries and affiliates covers every major country and metropolitan area. The company had 310,000 employees in 2007. By charging back travelers different fees for online versus offline transactions, adoption of the Cliqbook booking tool rose from 13 percent to 50 percent within a month and to 60 percent by year-end. In 2007, Amgen focused on sourcing, as it issued a request for proposals to find a travel management company that could consolidate the services that seven agencies were providing around the world and another RFP for traveler safety and security services. In 2007, out of 17,500 Amgen employees, there were 12,000 U.S. American Express cardholders. In Europe, the company used Citibank MasterCard for individual T&E expenses and American Express primarily for air. In 2008, the company selected Carlson Wagonlit Travel as its consolidated U.S. travel agency and managed service supplier partner. While Amgen considered third-party security services, it decided to go with its travel management company as the provider of traveler tracking services and pushing out automated content. Following a reduction in force that reduced the six-person travel group by four, Amgen needed a third party to take responsibility so that Amgen had someone working on their behalf. In 2007 and into 2008, Amgen issued a separate meetings and events request for proposals and selected a managed service supplier partner and a technology platform. Amgen also developed a mandatory meetings policy. Travel was the first area at Amgen to be globalized, which it accomplished by ensuring that each country had input into program requirements. Last year’s efforts laid the groundwork for changing the entire travel program this year to become a more defined, comprehensive program, with Carlson Wagonlit providing all air, hotel and ground sourcing. This year, the company consolidated travel management in 30 countries, a majority of the countries in which it does business. In 2007, 51 percent of Amgen’s U.S. booked air volume was spent on international and 49 percent on domestic travel. Amgen last year switched its primary airline relationships to airline alliance agreements with SkyTeam and Star Alliance. The company this year altered its policy to provide meal guidance rather than per diems. This year, it also rolled out Amadeus E-Travel as its online booking tool in Europe. >>Schlumberger, one of the world’s largest oil field services companies, following a substantial 2006 expansion raised its U.S. booked air volume by $4 million in 2007 from 2006, added 10,000 employees for a total of 80,000 globally and added another $4 billion in sales from the previous year to $23 billion. To offset its increasing air costs, Schlumberger raised its rate of online booking in North America to 55 percent of total transactions in 2007. In 2008, the company increased its global online adoption rate to 60 percent and its North American rate climbed to 80 percent. The company uses the Concur expense reporting tool to process nearly 40 percent of its North American expense reports. Schlumberger had fewer than 3,000 North American corporate cardholders and more than 2,000 cardholders outside the United States using the American Express card. Outside of North America, the company uses BCD and HRG in Europe and Africa to provide travel management services. Meanwhile, the company is working in 2008 to negotiate air contracts that will provide global coverage.
