American Express remains its primary domestic travel management company, though certain divisions work with other agencies. The package delivery service fields a fleet of 100,000 vehicles and about 600 airplanes. Its air fleet is the ninth-largest in North America and 11th in the world. Headcount declined slightly to 425,300 from 428,000 last year. Sales revenue grew by $2 billion from the previous year to $49 billion in 2007. >>Global defense and aerospace company BAE Systems saw its spending increase in 2007 after holding fairly steady in 2006. The company’s U.S. booked air volume increased 9 percent from 2006 and U.S. T&E increased 17 percent. Domestic transactions account for 65 percent of U.S. booked air volume. In 2007, BAE commenced a meetings program pilot and increased its U.S. booked meetings air volume to $8 million. By the end of 2008, 40 percent to 50 percent of meetings bookings will be processed through the managed meetings program, delivering more than 15 percent savings. The company made policy changes to encourage wider use of nonrefundable tickets. Also last year, the long-time onsite agent user changed to a hybrid model, using both virtually based and onsite agents furnished by American Express Business Travel. The company’s 16,000 U.S. corporate cardholders use American Express. The travel policy requires North American point-to-point reservations to be booked online. The company’s 40 percent online adoption rate has yielded a 27 percent to 30 percent reduction in average ticket price for domestic routes, accounting for $2.5 million in air savings in 2007. This year, BAE plans to renegotiate some of its airline contracts, its travel agency services and car rental agreements. Policy was revised to limit the number of executives on the same flight. Based on spending data from the first half of 2008, projected fullyear 2008 U.S. booked air expenditures are between $65 million and $70 million in volume and more than $150 million in U.S. T&E. American Express now provides consolidated agency reporting for its three business groups: Verizon Telecom, Verizon Business and Verizon Wireless. The telecommunications company uses American Express as its primary travel management company for Verizon Telecom and Carlson Wagonlit Travel for Verizon Business. Verizon Wireless last year removed BCD Travel from its program and instead consolidated its offline and online agency under Orbitz for Business. Last year, Verizon also changed its rental car options, removing Hertz and adding Avis and Budget to the Verizon Wireless travel program. Enterprise also was added as an off-airport option. US Airways Shuttle tickets now can be purchased through an agency or booking tool. Previously, they had only been available for purchase at an airport ticket counter or kiosk. The company also has pushed to increase the use of remote conferencing. Verizon this year is planning to consolidate global travel and leverage volume across the company, monitoring overall trip costs and pushing lower hotel tiers. The company in 2008 also plans to negotiate all agreements without volume or dollar commitments and with variable pricing and increase Verizon Business and Verizon Wireless online adoption above 90 percent. In 2007, the company underwent a global agency sourcing initiative and consolidated North American business travel operations with BCD Travel, its incumbent U.S. agency.
