The company’s revenues grew by 9.2 percent in 2007 compared with 2006. It had a total of 30,200 employees for the year. Nike uses BCD Travel as its agency for U.S. travelers, although it also uses HRG for travelers outside of the United States. The company also has been a pioneer in fitting environmental sustainability initiatives into its travel program, including deals with airlines and car rental companies to financially offset the environmental impact of Nike corporate travel. >>In 2007, information conglomerate Thomson Corp. increased its U.S. booked air volume more than $3 million from 2006. This slight increase, despite escalating costs, is due to its switching to American Express’ Axiom for its U.S. online booking system. This switch gave Thomson a substantial 12 percent increase in adoption. In 2007, Thomson consolidated its hotel program. The company also consolidated its travel program whenever possible. The company continued to use American Express as its primary corporate card vendor and as its consolidated U.S. agency. With the completion of its acquisition of Reuters in April 2008, Thomson will increase its overall spend by 30 percent. As a result, it is reevaluating its practices and soon will consolidate travel management company services, online booking systems and hotel and airline programs. In 2008, Thomson will issue a global airline request for proposals and develop a policy that allows business class service for those traveling transatlantic routes. Meanwhile, Nokia, which has U.S. headquarters in Irving, Texas, increased its number of employees from 68,000 in 2006 to 112,000. Nokia this year began to implement a global travel awareness program—a creative campaign to highlight the cost of travel and its effect on employee productivity, safety and health as well as the environment—that it began developing in 2007. The idea is to educate employees to seek to achieve business objectives without travel, if possible. The company will roll out the program to all locations by the end of the year. The program will capitalize on a separate, global effort to implement several Hewlett-Packard Halo videoconferencing suites in its offices. At the same time, the company is devising a means to measure the extent of the impact of this effort. 100 100 100 100 100 >>After a slight increase in travel spending in 2006, the International Monetary Fund last year trimmed $1 million from its U.S.-booked air volume and this year continues to further rein in travel expenses. The organization’s travel department in the past year underwent a broad policy review. As a result, IMF travelers operate under more restrictive policies. Among them, IMF now mandates its air travel with preferred suppliers. Though the organization does not mandate its hotel program, it has instituted spending ceilings on room expenses. The travel department in the past year has focused on improving communications with travelers and pushing out pertinent information, including suggested spending limits on business trips. The travel department implemented a customer relationship management system to monitor traveler inquiries and register traveler questions into a database. IMF, with the aid of American Express, has begun reporting CO2 emissions data with plans to implement an offset program.
