Incumbent travel management company American Express was renewed as the consolidated U.S. agency and is the primary agency outside of the United States. UnitedHealth Group’s travel department implemented a stronger policy around booking all reservations through preferred channels and strengthened enforcement of its cost-compliance parameters. Business class travel for employees is allowed on flights of more than 10 hours. This year, the company rolled out Cliqbook to its 13,000 U.S. travelers. U.S. travel reservations must be booked online. UnitedHealth Group’s goal is to increase adoption past 50 percent by year-end. I:Fao Cytric is used in some European countries. Development of a global travel policy is underway and is planned for deployment later this year. The policy will be consistent across operating units and will have addenda for regional flexibility. Technology has been a focus for the travel program this year, as UnitedHealth installed pre-trip auditing and ticket tracking tools furnished by American Express. The corporate finance department’s cost-compliance team now receives notification of noncompliant travel reservations. UnitedHealth Group’s meetings management program is developing and handles an average of 1,000 meetings annually. While 2007 U.S. booked air volume decreased 4.3 percent compared with 2006 to $44 million, companywide air volume increased 8.3 percent to $117 million. During the same period, the company developed aircraft safety guidelines for its travelers and currently is working on improving travel safety requirements and procedures for its 55,000 employees. This year, the major U.S. Department of Defense contractor implemented Fly America ticketing requirements, which require that KBR traveling employees use U.S. flag carrier service for all travel that is funded by the federal government, when applicable. While all U.S. travel management company services are consolidated with American Express, only 20 percent of agency services are consolidated globally. Gulf agencies Orient Travel and Kanoo Travel each handle 45 percent of non-U.S. travel volume and U.K.-based ATP manages another 10 percent. This year, KBR has consolidated reporting and benchmarking data. The pharmaceutical company spent $44.9 million in U.S. booked air, just below the $45.2 million reported for 2006, and companywide T&E spending was up 1 percent. Bristol-Myers Squibb’s travel program is completely global, with all countries of operation consolidated under Carlson Wagonlit Travel. Travelers in the United States use Carlson Wagonlit’s Horizon online booking tool, through which 73 percent of air bookings were funneled in 2007, and report expenses through IBM’s tool. Travelers outside of the United States book online using KDS and report expenses through Concur.
