BP continued to use American Express as its primary corporate card in the United States and Sabre as its primary domestic global distribution system, using Amadeus internationally. Adoption of the CWT Horizon online booking tool reached 73 percent in the United States and 38 percent in the United Kingdom. While adoption rates in Asia are lagging the other regions, BP was one of the first corporations to implement a self-booking tool in India. In 2008, BP has focused on globally standardizing its online booking tool. In 2007 and 2008, the company was using five tools. The single common platform first will be deployed to all North America, United Kingdom and Europe, Middle East and Africa locations. Later, the company plans to implement the same tool in Asia. Toward the end of 2007, BP began to assemble a two-person team to put together a program to create a process to better manage meetings and events. In 2008, the meetings management team gained traction as it sought to get a better line of sight on expenses, limit booking overand underexposure and select a meetings tool for registration and create an auditing trail for expenses. The company is working to craft policy for meetings to support a travel technology tool or intranet site by early 2009. THE CORPORATE TRAVEL >>IBM saw a nearly $100 million increase in net U.S. booked air spending in 2007, compared to a slight increase the previous year, according to BTN estimates. The spending hike reflects soaring costs and annual increases in profit of 10 percent to $42 billion and sales of about 8 percent to $99 billion for 2007, as well as the addition of about 70,000 employees, raising headcount to 426,969. The growth also reflects eight 2007 acquisitions. Total revenue from its global services business rose 17 percent and now accounts for more than half of IBM’s sales. Its IT services arm is the largest in the world and the company also is one of the largest providers of both software and semiconductors. According to the company’s Web site, IBM’s travel council provides “the lowest priced, best-in-class travel solution anywhere in the world within the boundaries of the IBM corporate travel policy that differentiates the IBM traveler and optimizes the travel process through e-travel industry solutions.” Subcouncils focus on air, hotel, auto rental, travel agency, car lease and ground transportation processes. IBM employees in North America must book travel through Online Travel Reservations, a tool built and hosted by Galileo. IBM’s Web site posted content that estimated the self-booking system’s savings at $75 million in the first three years, based on reduced agency fees and lower airfares. IBM and Galileo also have a global distribution system service agreement. Employees may book directly with Delta Shuttle, JetBlue and Southwest. Other Internet bookings are allowed when comparable itineraries provide specified savings levels. Policies stipulate allowable classes of service for international flights. The company requires the use of several preferred hotel chains for transient and group travel. In some cases, hotel companies electronically transmit detailed hotel folio data through American Express charge cards to IBM’s internal expense reporting system. IBM requires corporate travelers to use Hertz for car rental needs and recommends BostonCoach and Carey International for chauffeured transportation. IBM also is a supplier to the business travel industry in many ways, through distribution and transaction processing, outsourced travel procurement and IT services, expense reporting software and self-service kiosk technology. GE’s efforts to consolidate travel operations in the Asia/Pacific region continue to be stymied by political and infrastructural limitations. Unlike Europe, which is served by one business travel operations center, Asian countries still are served individually, as is the United States. GE now uses its GetThere online booking tool in 27 countries for about 70 percent of all its transactions. While in some countries adoption is at 85 percent, the company does not expect overall adoption to substantially increase because of its large number of international trips. The company last year rolled out its GetThere online booking system to all 18 European countries serviced by its call center in Warsaw, Poland. The company also has been a pioneer of touchless transactions for years and consistently has fulfilled more than 90 percent of its online transactions without manual intervention, which has produced huge savings in the United States and Europe. A longtime user of Prism’s Travel Manager’s Workstation, GE has used the Prism Avion system for the past three years. According to General Electric travel policy, travelers use the best fare of the day rather than particular preferred air and hotel vendors, even though it has negotiated deals with several.
