In September, hospitality architects, designers, owners, and product manufacturers gathered in Miami for HD Americas, a Hospitality Design magazine event. Formerly HD Boutique, the conference offered presentations, networking opportunities, and a wealth of exhibitions with a focus on Latin America. The managing partners of Grupo Habita, Carlos Couturier and Moises Micha, participated in a keynote conversation with Hospitality Design magazine Editor in Chief Michael Adams. The partners discussed their first ventures, their most recent projects, and the challenges and triumphs of building boutique properties in Latin America. The Owners' Roundtable-the signature event of HD Americas-brought together owners, developers, brand executives, and decision makers. Switching tables every ten minutes, the owners shared their outlooks with attendees. Other seminars provided insight 24 from owners and brands that have made ground in Latin America, including Ricardo Suarez, vice president for the Latin American division of Starwood, and John Walters, vice president of the Latin America and Caribbean segment of Hilton. Other talks, ranging from the future of design in the region as well as the destruction and recovery of the Marco Island Marriott, engaged both attendees and exhibitors. Site tours included the Lord Balfour Hotel and the Gale South Beach & Regent Hotel, both located in Miami Beach. The show concluded with a visit to The James Royal Palm and remarks from the hotel's designer, David Davis of Rottet Studio. "Exhibitors' expectations were exceeded at the show," says show director Liz Sommerville. "An intimate setting allowed people to make new acquaintances and renew previous ones, and the quality both in the conferences and on the show floor has grown significantly.
