10 | Newsworthy | Headlining Something new for Starbucks Photos: Courtesy of Starbucks Corp., Seattle D ebuting in late July, Seattle-based Starbucks Corp.’s latest concept is founded on several of the company’s core principles: a focus on premium quality, passionate partners and a rich customer experience. It shares the company’s mission and values, is pioneered by Starbucks partners and offers Starbucks whole bean coffee and Tazo full-leaf tea—only, it’s not a Starbucks. It’s 15th Ave. Coffee & Tea. The new 15th Ave. Coffee & Tea concept opened in the Capitol Hill area of Seattle, with a | Books door bearing its logo and a simple, “Inspired by Starbucks” tagline. Housed in a former Starbucks location that was previously slated for closure, the new store serves up a vast offering of whole bean coffee and full-leaf tea, as well as beer and wine, pastries from a local bakery and Starbucks-brand ice cream. After selecting beans or tea leaves from the crafty displays, customers have a multitude of brewing options to choose from, including manual pour-over, press and Clover for coffees, and manually filled sachets, automatic brewers and tea pots Ralph Pucci publishes new book R alph Pucci International has released a new book, called “SHOW,” that covers the life of the famed New York-based mannequin manufacturing company. Published by Glitterati Inc., “SHOW” features photographs taken by Pucci’s photographer, Antoine Bootz. The book showcases the mannequins, furniture and art of such talents as Ruben and Isabel Toledo, Kenny Scharf, Anna Sui, Maira Kalman, Chris Makos and James Brown. Included are Andrée Putman, Chris Lehrecke, Jens Risom, Vladimir Kagan, Patrick Naggar, Paul Mathieu, Herve Van Der Straeten, Jerome Abel Seguin, India Mahdavi, Vicente Wolf, Kevin Walz and David Weeks. “SHOW” also features the mannequin likeness of Christy Turlington and Veruschka, and mannequins designed by Ralph Pucci. for full-leaf teas and herbal infusions. Inspired from the original Starbucks location that opened in Seattle’s Pike Place Market 38 years ago, 15th Ave. Coffee & Tea features a coffeehouse design reminiscent of “a European mercantile,” the company says. The use of locally sourced and reused materials creates an eclectic, raw vibe. Many materials used for the store were sourced from existing Starbucks locations—the bar top and doors were repurposed from the Seattle University Village store prior to its renovation; chairs were sourced from area Starbucks stores and refinished; and chalkboard frames were made using shipping pallets from the Starbucks Support Center in Seattle. The store’s community table was made using wood from an old ship, and wood cladding was made from a barn in the Pacific Northwest. Seating was repurposed from a local theater, and tables were created using repurposed Belgian marble. The 20-ft. mural and metalwork were created by a local artist, adding to the rustic neighborhood feel. 15th Ave. Coffee & Tea is part of a test that will include an additional two Seattle shops, similarly named after their surrounding neighborhoods. —JESSIE BOVE, MANAGING EDITOR For more 15th Ave. Coffee & Tea photos, visit www.ddimagazine.com/projectgallery. | September 2009 www.ddimagazine.com http://www.ddimagazine.com/projectgallery http://www.ddimagazine.com
