22 | Design Snapshot Photos: Courtesy of Sephora Green beauty Sephora debuts its first LEED-certified store By Jessie Bove, Managing Editor ith the debut of its first Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED)-certified store in San Francisco, LVMH-owned beauty chain Sephora is showing its devoted cosmetics-junkie followers that being green can be beautiful. Located in Stonestown Galleria, the new LEED Platinum store is Sephora’s first to achieve certification out of its 800 stores across the globe. Sephora’s goal was to integrate the requirements of LEED certification into its building process, while still preserving the essence of the traditional Sephora retail concept. “We wanted to show that we could maintain the same level of sophistication in our stores while being better stewards of the environment,” explains Celia Wing, senior vice president of real estate, Sephora. “We knew that many of our clients shared the same eco-friendly values that we at Sephora possess. Fortunately, the LEED-certification process gave us an industryrecognized vehicle to inform our clients of our environmentally conscious building practices.” Sephora focused its efforts on energy, lighting, water and material use, as well as incorporating a variety of other sustainable strategies to achieve Platinum-level certification for the 5,785-sq.-ft. Stonestown store. One of the major decorative measures Sephora focused on was the selection of storefront material. “We were able to work with a W local artisan builder to develop concrete panels that met our color and finish expectations that are comprised of recycled content,” Wing says. Throughout the store, the company used all low-VOC paints, and gondolas and linears have LED lighting and a percentage of recycled content in the fixtures and finishes. Eco-friendly elements, such as linoleum in the back-of-house areas and Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)certified wood flooring in the sales area, further contributed to LEED certification. The store also offers a bike rack for employees to use to further reduce its carbon footprint. Other notable sustainable features include Energy Star-rated equipment and appliances; the use of green, non-harmful housekeeping products; and high-efficiency plumbing fixtures for a 40 percent reduction in water usage. Seventythree percent of the store’s construction waste was also recycled. In terms of energy savings, the store is 25 percent under California Title 24 Energy Compliance. Lastly, remote monitoring of the mechanical system substantially reduces the use of energy. Wing concludes, “Overall, we are extremely pleased with the way all of the eco-friendly processes found in our store have been implemented and are excited to be part of the environmentally conscious movement taking place right now.” www.ddionline.com |ÊOc toberÊ2010 http://www.ddionline.com
