My network used to consist of people I knew and the people they knew. Now, I’m linked with people from all backgrounds, from all over the world. I’m linked to people I know very well and with people I have only the most tenuous of connections. Once, I had to call or e-mail an associate looking for a referral; now I troll my contacts and their contacts until I inevitably find a common connection. For all of my connections, I likely won’t meet or speak with even onethird of these people. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve accepted an invitation to link with someone, sent them a follow up e-mail and never heard back. I’m sure you can relate. Social networks are much more about breadth than depth. Collecting links, friends and followers is certainly a worthy pastime in this age, but how can you dig deeper and make these relationships beneficial and meaningful? GlobalShop is a great opportunity to enhance your social network by putting a face—a real, three-dimensional face—with a name. At GlobalShop, you can meet the people whose faces are on your monitor. You can schedule a mixer with one of your industry social groups. You can see products or concepts you’ve only seen online, and meet the people who produce them.
