tarted in 1974, Macy’s Annual Flower Show is a time-honored tradition in Manhattan, heralding the return of spring with more than a million flowers turned into artistic displays both in-store and out. And the legendary store windows for Macy’s Herald Square are no exception—40 windows also decked to the nines with imaginative, horticultural feats. But how do those windows come together so effortlessly? Well, after following Macy’s director of windows, Paul Olszewski, throughout the entire process—from conception to implementation to final installation—we’ve come to realize it might not be so effortless. Through the next several pages, Paul will take us on a first-hand photographic tour of exactly how much work goes into this annual tradition with a behind-the-scenes look at the Macy’s Flower Show windows at the Herald Square store. Follow the photos and notes from Paul to see exactly what goes into bringing tens of thousands of flowers into a living reality in Macy’s iconic store windows. (And special thanks to Adrian Wilson, who captured it all on camera for us!)
