30 AWARDS 201 1 Influencers Harry Cunningham Senior Vice President, Store Planning, Design and Visual Merchandising, Saks Fifth Avenue Retail Design R enovation has been the name of the game for Harry Cunningham, who has been the man behind Saks’ nonstop remodel efforts this year. Cunningham and his team have been renovating various parts of the Saks Fifth Avenue flagship store in New York, as well as working on a renovation of the Palm Desert store (set to open later this year) and additional projects slated to open in 2012. Additionally, Cunningham continues to implement new presentation concepts in Saks’ full-line stores, including new men’s and women’s contemporary departments and a new Kids Shoe area. By the end of the year, the company will have opened an additional four new OFF 5TH stores and will have renovated three existing OFF 5Th stores with the new “luxury in a loft” format, a merchandising aesthetic that significantly changed the off-price industry. Giorgio Borruso Principal, Giorgio Borruso Design s the namesake behind Marina Del Rey, Calif.-based global retail design and architecture firm Giorgio Borruso Design, Italian-born architect Giorgio Borruso can be found on any corner of the globe on any given day. As evidenced in his recent works for Carlo Pazolini in Milan, Snaidero and a unique historical tribute to eyeglasses at Grand Central Station in New York, he is a passionate, detail-driven designer who finds inspiration in life around him every day. “An architect needs to build,” he says. “I don’t believe in genius. It’s hard work, and it’s a lot of difficult choices. This is the way I see architecture.” A | September 2011
