Alison Embrey Medina, Executive Editor, DDI Magazine
Alison Embrey Medina is the executive editor of DDI Magazine, a trade publication serving the retail
design industry. Through the pages of DDI, she covers and comments on retail store design, visual
merchandising, architecture, marketing and branding, from luxury and specialty to discount and dollar
stores. Medina has spoken on trends in retail design and visual merchandising at GlobalShop, EuroShop,
Global Department Store Summit, Retail Asia Expo, A.R.E.’s Retail Design Collective, NRF’s BIG Show,
Hospitality Design Expo and the Retail Design Institute’s local chapter events, as well as retail design
conferences in Brazil, Germany, Turkey and Mexico. In her 10 years with Nielsen, she has held multiple
editorial positions with DDI, as well as a senior writer position for New York-based Convenience Store
News. She holds a bachelor’s degree in magazine journalism from The University of Georgia’s Henry W.
Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication, and currently resides in Atlanta.
Marieke van der Poel, Chief Creative Offi cer and Founder, Proef LLC
Marieke van der Poel has worked as a strategic consultant for major multinational marketing,
fashion, activewear and soft goods, consumer electronics and product design companies, both in her
previous capacity as a consultant for leading international trend forecasting companies PeclersParis
and ESP Trend Labs and in her current role. Her experience ranges from macro trend translations for
international marketing teams to specifi c ready-to use color, material and style design direction for all
types of consumer products. She is highly regarded within the industry for her ability to connect highlevel,
long-term trending to time targeted and brand specifi c trend stories, translating these to tangible
product and design direction. Her proprietary process is designed to build brand strategies, and
inspire beautiful, well-timed products. Currently based in San Francisco, she has previously lived in
Italy and the Netherlands, where she started her career in trend analysis and worked as a stylist, editor
and consultant for Italian, English and Dutch magazines and fashion brands. Marieke has presented at
major trade and marketing events in the United States and abroad and has been featured by both local
and international media.
