54 | State of the Retail Design Industry 2012 State of the Retail Design Industry 2012 State of the Retail 2012 Find out what’s keeping retailers and designers up at night, and the changes in store for the year ahead By Jessie Dowd, Senior Editor DI’s fourth-annual State of the Retail Design Industry survey tapped into the minds of retail design’s presidents, store planners, contract designers, CEOs and just about everyone in between to get a pulse on the industry and find out what everyone is talking about—whether it’s being shouted from the rooftops or quietly whispered in back rooms. On the following pages, you’ll see what hot-button issues are weighing on everyone’s minds, what’s keeping them up at night and why they are so 101-250 excited about the challenges ahead in 2013 and the exponentially shifting 251-500 consumer landscape. But more than a quarter (26.8 percent) of companies responded “Excellent/Very Good” this year, up from 25.4 percent in 2011, It seems that at this juncture in the history of retail, where digital/online shopping is really coming into play as a force, the physical space is becoming more important and more fluid than ever.
