10 | From the Show Director GlobalShop2013 Sponsored by: Why store design matters April 16-18, 2013 McCormick Place, Chicago www.globalshop.org GlobalShop 2013 I f you read my column in the August issue (yes Mom, I’m talking to you), you know that DDI’s Executive Editor Alison Embrey Medina led a panel discussion at Interbike 2012, called “Why Store Design Matters.” Interbike is the bicycle industry’s premier tradeshow, and its attendees are primarily bicycle dealers and retailers visiting to learn about the latest products and innovations they can feature in their stores. Many bicycle retailers are independent stores or small chains that don’t have staff members dedicated to store design or merchandising. However, we had a hunch that a panel on retail design would be interesting to this group—and that hunch proved to be true. I’m happy to report that Alison’s panel, which included such leading retail design firms as JGA, Gensler and Little, presented to a standing-room-only crowd. Store design matters. To you, that’s a given, because it’s your profession. But more and more independent retailers are coming to understand that it’s not enough to simply have a bricks-and-mortar storefront for really great products. Shopping is an experience, and the retail environment can have a great impact on a customer’s decision on whether to buy. While most everything is available online these days, there’s something to be said for experiencing a product, getting hands-on with it and being able to talk to a knowledgeable person. At Interbike, we saw that there are lots of retailers that know that design and presentation are important to their success, and they are willing to engage with experts to learn how they can improve. They probably don’t have designers on staff, so the owners and managers have to wear that hat and make sure that the design of their store is a consideration in every business decision they make. The feedback from Alison’s panel shows that there is a hunger for this information, and we aim to help fill it. Most of the people who come to GlobalShop or read DDI are actively involved in store design and shopper marketing on a daily basis. Our parent company, Nielsen Expositions, has many other tradeshows and publications, several of which are focused on retail. In 2013, we’re going to expand our efforts to reach specialty retailers at some of Nielsen’s other retail tradeshows, like Outdoor Retailer, ASD and Medtrade. We’re going to take the combined message of DDI and GlobalShop to these new audiences while exposing them to education, products and services that can help them put the appropriate focus on the design of their retail environments. Be on the lookout for GlobalShop and DDI in some unexpected places in the coming months! We will continue to keep you informed about these new venues, because retailers everywhere can benefit from learning more about why store design matters. 1145 Sanctuary Pkwy., Ste. 355 Alpharetta, GA 30009-4772 Ph: (770) 291-5400 Fax: (770) 569-5105 GLOBALSHOP SHOW DIRECTOR | Tim Fearney (770) 291-5421 tim.fearney@nielsen.com SEnIOR ACCOunT ExECuTIvE | Roarke Dowd (770) 291-5428 roarke.dowd@nielsen.com SEnIOR ACCOunT ExECuTIvE | David Muirhead (770) 291-5432 david.muirhead@nielsen.com ACCOunT ExECuTIvE | Dreama McDaniel (770) 291-5420 dreama.mcdaniel@nielsen.com MARKETInG MAnAGER | Brent Harrison (770) 291-5512 brent.harrison@nielsen.com COnFEREnCE MAnAGER | Toni Ward (770) 291-5441 antoinette.ward@nielsen.com SEnIOR OPERATIOnS MAnAGER | Derrick Nelloms (770) 291-5452 derrick.nelloms@nielsen.com SEnIOR vICE PRESIDEnT | Joe Randall Contact us: A Division of Nielsen PRESIDEnT, nIELSEn ExPOSITIOnS | David Loechner SEnIOR vICE PRESIDEnT, HuMAn RESOuRCES | Michael Alicea SEnIOR vICE PRESIDEnT, BuSInESS DEvELOPMEnT | Darrell Denny vICE PRESIDEnT, FInAnCE | Denise Bashem vICE PRESIDEnT, OPERATIOnS | Lori Jenks vICE PRESIDEnT, DIGITAL | Teresa Reilly vICE PRESIDEnT, MAnuFACTuRInG & MARKETInG SERvICES | Joanne Wheatley www.ddionline.com Tim Fearney GlobalShop Show Director tim.fearney@nielsen.com | November/December 2012 http://www.globalshop.org http://www.ddionline.com
