| 27 Estimated New U.S. Store Openings 2012 (Representative Survey) Retailer Editor’s Note: This representative overview of the activity in 2012 of new store openings and announced new stores primarily for North America was obtained from announcements in the trade, business and professional print and electronic press; published data from public companies; and reports from research in the public domain. This report does not include remodels or renovations. R etail stores are opening and expanding at an encouragingly rapid rate in the United States, as well as around the world. It’s a trend not typically featured in the mainstream business press, but original research for DDI Magazine—covering representative reports of 130 companies with stores in the United States from the first to the fourth quarter of 2012—supports this theory. As the industry moved into its high-grossing fourth quarter, U.S. retail sales, which account for 18 percent of U.S. Gross Domestic Product (GDP), had risen to $2.57 trillion, up 3.5 percent year-to-date. “Pent-up demand is turning desires into needs, which is one reason why consumers have begun opening up their wallets,” says Jack Kleinhenz, chief economist of the National Retail Federation. A January 2013 published survey by a retail research firm indicated that the number of retailers in their database planning new stores rose 16.2 percent, the highest in five years. For the small shops category, where formerly mom-and-pop entrepreneurs were the main contributors, this report states a shift of small shop tenancy to wellcapitalized, national retailers. Kathleen Jordan, principal and retail practice leader at San Francisco-based Gensler, cites 2007 as the date when the slowdown in the economy was first felt by retailers. “Companies that typically upgraded every five to seven years then stretched this span to 10 years,” she says. “The Walmart Supercenters Walmart Dollar General Family Dollar Target Walmart Neighborhood Market Costco TJX/Marshall’s 7-Eleven Bed, Bath & Beyond Walgreens Subway H&M DSW Safeway Lifestyle rue21 Nordstrom Rack Ascena Retail Group Starbucks CityTarget Charming Charlie Macy’s Adidas Best Buy Mobile Nike Concept Stores jcpenney Saks OFF 5TH Zumiez Athleta/Gap Nordstrom Bloomingdale’s Outlet Neiman Marcus UNIQLO Vision Works New Stores Opened 135 100 625 475 25 80 19 85 961 41 175 1,007 42 39 10 125 15 90 161 4 40 2 100 100 8 2 5 50 28 1 5 1 2 17 Average Square Footage Per Store 185,000 102,000 7,000 9,000 134,000 38,000 141,000 30,000 2,600 45,000 8,000 1,200 21,000 20,000 64,000 5,100 35,000 5,500 3,000 90,000 8,000 155,000 3,000 2,500 27,000 100,000 30,000 3,000 5,000 125,000 25,000 86,000 36,000 4,000 Estimated Total New Store Square Footage 24,975,000 10,200,000 4,375,000 4,275,000 3,350,000 3,040,000 2,679,000 2,550,000 2,498,600 1,845,000 1,400,000 1,208,400 882,000 780,000 640,000 637,500 525,000 495,000 483,000 360,000 320,000 310,000 300,000 250,000 216,000 200,000 150,000 150,000 140,000 125,000 125,000 86,000 72,000 68,000 Source: This representative overview was collected from announcements in the trade, business and professional print and electronic press; published data from public companies; and reports from research in the public domain.
