Ken Nisch Chairman, JGA Unfortunately, sketching very often has become a lost art form, as computer-driven things tend to be the preferred form of execution. This is understandable, as many can think and create, many fewer can draw; and thinkers are looking for ways to express their thoughts. Without drawing skills, they rely on things digitally. Drawing and hand skills, relative to enhancing the creative process, are often about shortening the timeline, and the connection between what is thought and what is rendered. An artist—think of the Impressionist artists sketching en plein air, which means sketching in the real world or sketching outdoors—completes the painting back at the studio. This is a bit of what has happened both positively and negatively in today’s world with sketching. Often, we skip the en plein air step of the process, immediately moving to the finished product without the interim step. Those who can draw have the ability to use the en plein air stage as a way of evolving their ideas in a more organic way, versus going from idea to finished product. Clearly, those who can hand sketch have a huge advantage in the design profession. When you say “sketch,” it is sometimes a single line, or sketching can be a way to create a storyboard. As well, sketches can be a rendering. And sketching is a way to document, test and explore ideas in real time—in ways the computer can’t, thus providing a great advantage.
