DDi - November/December 2013 - (Page 10)

10 | From the Editor Then, now and next O n May 21, 2001, I sunk into the front seat of my silver Chrysler Neon wearing a suit bought two days prior, placed my coffee in the cracked cup holder, cranked up some Indigo Girls and started off on the drive to my first day as an intern at Display & Design Ideas magazine. I was a magazine major at The University of Georgia at the time, and this was my first internship, and my first time in the office of a real, professional magazine-or any office, for that matter. My previous summer jobs had included making smoothies, running a cash register and walking on stilts (strange, but true-ask me about it sometime if you're curious!). All skilled positions in their own right, but the office environment was somewhat of a foreign entity to me. I was incredibly nervous and unsure, wondering how many coffee runs I would have to make that day. Instead, I was delivered a writing assignment within my first two hours on the job. It was a product spotlight on flooring, and the new (at the time) trend of layering in color on non-traditional surfaces. That first day and that first article, my friends, sparked not only a career for me, but it also sparked an unknown level of intrigue. My first interview, scheduled to last 10 minutes, went on for almost 90. I overshot my word count on that first piece by just about double. There was just so much to say. As it turns out, I found retail-and all design facets of it-completely and utterly fascinating. Twelve years later, I view the world a bit differently than when I first stepped foot inside DDI's editorial offices (although I still always drink coffee on the way to work and still jam out to the Indigo Girls). I have grown up with this magazine, traveled the globe for this magazine, learned how to study retail and its thousands of effervescent nuances and details through this magazine. And that's why I am perhaps most qualified to be able to tell you this next piece of news: I think it's time we made this magazine even better. You can't run faster or jump higher if you stand still. So, we plan to run as fast and jump as high as our little magazine legs will take us. This issue marks the last edition of DDI as you know it. Coming in January, we will introduce the new and improved, amped up and painstakingly rethought DDI. So new, in fact, that we even decided to change the name. Be on the lookout for design:retail to land in your mailbox in 2014. We can't wait to show you what's next.
