Re-creating History
after
H
ow do you
make a white
box feel architecturally relevant?
Despite being in a fully
renovated landmark
building that originally
housed a cotton printing factory, the space for
the new Patagonia store
in New York's Meatpacking District was as
white box as it gets.
The design team
conducted extensive
research and collected
historical images of the
area to identify relevant
architectural features
true to the design of the
area and the building's
original era.
"An authentic sense
of history to the building was re-created
by highlighting the
Meatpacking District's rich past,"
says Andrew Lee, principal with New
York-based MNA (Michael Neumann
Architecture). Lee says the desired
effect was achieved through incorporating locally sourced reclaimed
and industrial materials, including
extensive locally reclaimed timber
for the floors and ceiling joists, local
reclaimed brick and, get this, a fully
functioning meat rail. Now that's digging your hooks in.
