news When in Rome still powerful and symbolic to be remembered years after.” To accomplish the look, Kawai adopted the idea of Chinese lace using arabesque metal plates, laser-cut with Chinese flowers. The “glowing flower shield”, backlit by LEDs to echo the effect of shoji screens, engulfs the 3,230-square-foot space, stretching across all walls and the ceiling. During the design process, Kawai was constantly traveling to China, looking for authentic elements to incorporate into the design. In fact the six central fish tanks, each filled with 350 ryukin goldfish, was inspired by an incidental occurrence in China, “when I saw hundreds of gold fish moving vividly in the tanks giving the motion effects of a ‘red screen.’” www.design-spirits.com; www.caesarspalace.com Tokyo designer Yukichi Kawai hopes his striking design for Beijing Noodle No. 9, a new casual dining destination at Caesar’s Palace, translates to its location on the Vegas Strip. “We thought that the single phrase expression of the Chinese lace is not irrelevant in characterizing the Chinese culture in its foreign context,” says Kawai, “so we hope that it is acceptable by the Americans.” Working on the $5 million project in 2007 and 2008, Kawai and his team at design spirits co., ltd., were, as much of the rest of the world, excited about the Beijing Olympics. Inspired by the iconic, contemporary architecture of the Bird’s Nest and Bubble Pool, he wanted to create “something contemporary and legible for everyone to understand but at the same time keeping a design that is International Style Italian designer Giorgio Armani’s newest project isn’t his fall collection. It’s the Armani/Ristorante 5th Avenue located on the top floor of his first U.S. concept store. And for the design that blurs fashion and food, Armani called on Doriana and Massimiliano Fuksas. “The building that incorporates Armani/5th Avenue holds a very important place in the history of architecture because its façade is one of the first examples of the ‘International Style,’” Massimiliano says. “When one is dealing with such a cultural milestone, one must always bear in mind that the exterior is totally New York, while the interior should have its own identity—a reflection of the flair and aesthetic values that define the Giorgio Armani style.” In the 5,200-square-foot restaurant and bar, that equated to beige walls, black floors and ceilings, and metal details throughout. Theatrical lighting highlights the curved forms of the furniture, a form that is echoed in the multi-level store anchored by a central, sculptural staircase. “It connects all the different levels that accommodate the Armani universe range by range,” Doriana says. www.hdmag.com May/June 2009 39
