This year brings all the sparkle and glam to the next level. Fine jewelry designer Erica Courtney is currently using Zultanite, an elegant, color-changing gemstone that she calls the “new socialite on the block.” “I let my gemstones speak to me. All of them have a piece of jewelry they want to become a part of and I just try to unlock that mystery and make it happen,” Courtney explains. For ﬁne jeweler Pamela Froman, clients are calling out for color. “I’m constantly making new pieces for my collection of one-of-a-kind and limited edition colored stone cap earrings and pendants,” says Froman, who also notes a resurgence of interest in her tri-color gold pieces. “I’m really drawn to the cool tones right now; I’ve been designing a lot with blue-toned stones like aquamarine and rainbow moonstone.” And for precious jewelry designer Vicente Agor, it’s the use of non-traditional materials that is the showstopper. “The patina of blackened sterling silver looks really fresh and some designers are using materials as diverse as titanium or rubber,” he says. Layering is also key: “several layers of rings, bangles, and necklaces,” says jewelry designer Gurhan Orhan, who specializes in metals and stones. “I think the industry is headed in a sentimental direction; reinventing your inherited jewelry and making them current and wearable,” says Courtney. And Agor agrees. “I like the mix of high and low in fashion. For example, a great ring worn with your grandmother’s locket, a pant from H&M paired with a top from Dries Van Noten, and a vintage handbag.” And designer Todd Reed sees more sustainable materials being used. “There is more of a focus on ethically mined, recycled, and sources with a conscious,” says Reed.

Though oversized and stackable rings and statement necklaces have been hogging the spotlight the past few years, Joyce Packman, Bloomingdale’s vice president and divisional merchandise manager of fashion accessories, says this time “it’s all about the wrist! “Bracelets are the key driver when it comes to this trend. Friendship, enamel, bangles—it’s all about mixing and matching various styles and stacking them so that you have an arm full of bracelets.” And to go with that ’70s fashion vibe, Packman predicts the return of Santa Fe’s favorite, turquoise, closer to April. “This color will be very popular for all types of jewelry: earrings, bracelets, necklaces, etc.”
