We often hear people say that those they work with over a period of time—whether it’s a design team, a cast of a play, or a group of factory workers—are “like a family.” The burdens and joys of fulfilling a task, meeting a challenge, or building a car (not to mention spending so much time together) can create emotional bonds that can match or even exceed those we share with blood relatives or spouses. But what if co-workers are truly your family, people you see not only in the workplace but at family reunions, holiday parties, or sleeping on the next pillow? We’ve noticed over the years that a fair number of our readers work directly with family members—husbands with wives, brothers with brothers, fathers with children, life partners. Our curiosity led to the theme of this year’s People Issue, as we interviewed 15 “duos” who share lives as well as timecards. The resulting profiles create a breezy examination at how fulfilling—and at times how difficult—it can be to walk the delicate balance between personal and professional. We hope you enjoy it. (And if you have any stories of your own about working with loved ones, let me know via the email Photo by Oscar Einzig address below; we’ll be happy to share them on our website.) We hope you’ve already made your plans to visit HD Boutique, this year to be held on September 13-14th at the Miami Beach Convention Center. As usual, we’ve gathered a top-flight collection of conference topics, from the greening of hospitality to Latin American boutique hotels. Some special events: A 10th-year anniversary celebration of Wave of the Future, not only honoring this year’s crop of young industry stars, but including appearances by WOTF alumni. Also, I’ll be conducting a one-on-one with superstar Tony Chi. We’ve been after Tony to make a solo appearance for several years, and he’s finally found time in his wicked schedule. If you’ve ever heard Tony onstage in full throttle, you’ll know the fun and enlightenment you’re in for; if not, be prepared for a spectacular hour. See you there!
