With the acronym BRIC so embedded in the international economic lexicon, I realized as we were beginning to plan this issue that I didn’t know its beginnings: who coined it, and why? A bit of easy research revealed that the term was ﬁrst used by economist Jim O’Neill about ten years ago in a paper called Building Better Global Economic Brics. O’Neill, currently the chairman of Goldman Sachs Asset Management, wrote the piece to call attention to the potential of Brazil, Russia, India, and China to eventually overtake the economic power of the G7 countries. (And if you’re a possible Jeopardy contestant—or simply want to wow your friends at a cocktail party—you can cite O’Neill as the creator of the newer acronym, MIKT, standing for Mexico, Indonesia, (South) Korea, and Turkey. But MIKT doesn’t fall as easily from the tongue, does it?) BRIC also provides us with an easy entrance into these four countries from a design perspective. Where economies ﬂourish, so does development, and where development thrives, so do design and architecture. We have in the past featured projects from each of these countries, but this issue gives us an opportunity to dig more deeply into what’s happening with new hotels and restaurants. And our four project features give compelling evidence that Photo by Clodagh creativity and innovation have arrived there as well. As we fast approach HD Expo (May 15th-17th) in Las Vegas, let me direct your attention to page 36, which lists some of the highlights of our conference sessions, as usual a rich array of topics and speakers drawn from some of the world’s best designers, architects, and industry leaders. This is also a good time to introduce Elizabeth Grimsley, the new conference director for the Hospitality Design Group. Elizabeth comes to us with twentyeight years experience in the interior design, architecture, and construction ﬁelds, holding positions with Rand Construction, Leo A Daly, ForrestPerkins, and BBGM. Elizabeth will oversee the conference programs for HD Summit, HD Expo, and HD Boutique. She brings great warmth, a sharp sense of humor, and wide industry knowledge to the job. We’re lucky to have her. Enjoy the issue.
